About Us

Edward and Irma Maria J. Byrd established the Edward B. Byrd Charitable Foundation in 2011 to support the field of agriculture and agricultural studies in the state of Maryland.

As a lifetime farmer, Mr. Byrd grew up in Dawsonville, Maryland and farmed the land that has been in the Byrd family since the 1860's. There, they raised angus, wheat, corn and other crops.

Irma Maria J. Byrd, a native of Austria, married Ed in 1952 and began working on the family farm planting crops and raising cattle. Irma worked alongside Ed, often bottle-feeding the calves born on the farm and frequently bringing them into the basement of their home to keep warm!

Ed and Irma were married for more than 50 years and have touched the lives of many in the Poolesville, Maryland area. They leave behind many loyal and wonderful friends and will never be forgotten.

Who We Are

The Edward B. Byrd Charitable Foundation was created to suppose and advance the field of agriculture within the state of Maryland through the education and training of persons interested in careers in agriculture.

The Edward B. Byrd Charitable Foundation has partnered with the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc. to create the Edward B. Byrd Endowed Scholarship in Agriculture. Each year, this fund will be utilized to provide 5 qualified students from the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a $5,000 scholarship in the field of agriculture. The dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources shall administer the fund and select recipients.
